Flat Tax: Could It Work?
Word Count: 610
Summary:
As the new year approaches, my thoughts turn to our annual task: the dreaded tax return. Like many, I often postpone filing until the deadline, and each year, I vow to be better. But in today's world, is this really the best system we can devise?Article Body:
As the new year unfolds, I'm already contemplating the inevitable task that comes each year?"filing my tax return.Like countless others in our great nation, I often wait until the last possible moment to mail out my tax return. Last year, I promised myself it would be different. I aimed to tackle the task before that final rush.
But in this era of technological advancements?"where satellites can read license plates from miles above and we can stream TV shows on our phones?"can't we devise a better system?
When the original tax laws were introduced in 1913, they were straightforward, featuring tax brackets from 1 to 7 percent?"a far cry from today's complexity. Now, the IRS tax codes, regulations, and guidelines contain over 9 million words. No wonder people find it confusing! Is there anyone who truly understands this behemoth?
To put this in perspective:
- The Declaration of Independence contains just over 1,300 words.
- The U.S. Constitution, a foundation of governance for over 200 years, has about 5,000 words.
- The Holy Bible manages with fewer than 800,000 words.
In 2004, the Office of Management & Budget estimated that as a nation, we spent over $200 billion on compliance costs. Considering our manufacturing industries are battling against cheaper imports, shouldn't our leaders channel this money into job creation? Experts agree that $200 billion could generate over 3 million jobs, boosting sales of goods and state sales tax revenue.
Every morning, we're confronted by taxes. Electricity, utilities, and those pesky telephone taxes (which seem endless) all eat into our earnings. We've become so accustomed to these expenses that we hardly notice them anymore.
Isn't it time for a simple flat tax that everyone can understand? Many countries have successfully implemented this straightforward and cost-effective method, revitalizing their economies. Imagine the ease of completing a tax return on a single sheet of paper!
A flat rate tax for individuals and businesses?"with the same rules for all, regardless of income?"could be the answer. Successful countries have adopted flat taxes of less than 17%, with provisions to protect lower income groups.
Could life really be that simple? The real question is: would our leaders want us to understand their actions? And let's not forget the influence of lobbyists. Still, it's nice to dream.
As Benjamin Franklin famously said, "In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes."
