Battle of the Riches: Good vs. Evil ?" Which Side Is Money On?

Why Wealth Matters

Surprisingly, one of my students once asked me, "Why become wealthy?" She couldn't grasp why anyone would desire financial abundance. When I asked her to define wealth for the class, it became clear she had a mental block against it. To her, wealthy individuals achieved their status by exploiting others and endlessly accumulating riches.

With such a mindset, is it any wonder she struggled to save money? She was caught in a constant battle with herself. Even when she managed to save, she'd splurge impulsively, returning to living paycheck to paycheck. It's a painful cycle.

Sadly, she's not alone. In my experiences teaching and holding seminars, I've found that around 45% of people facing financial difficulties must address this mindset before progressing. It's not just about credit card debt; that's not the core issue.

The Fundamental Questions

The crux of the matter is permission. Many haven't allowed themselves to become wealthy because they haven't tackled these key questions:

1. Do you view money as inherently good or evil?
2. Do you want more money to fulfill needs and desires for yourself and loved ones?
3. Are you afraid of acquiring wealth because you associate it with wrongdoing?

These questions are crucial. If you see money as a necessary evil, your ability to earn, save, and use it wisely will be hindered by your negative perceptions. Money itself isn't evil; it's merely a tool, like a hammer. You can use a hammer to build a house or to harm someone. The hammer doesn't choose; the person using it does.

Reframing Your Perspective

Money, like any tool, is neutral. It enables the purchase of things we need or want. Your paycheck, a side job, or change found in a parking lot all spend the same. No one questions the source; its value is consistent. The perception of money as good or bad relies on our attitudes.

If you associate money with negativity, ask yourself:

1. Why do you believe money is evil?
2. Is your view influenced by your family's handling of money?
3. Do your friends have money, and how do they manage it?

Write down and reflect on your answers. Recognizing the internal conflict about money is crucial for change. To maintain a positive financial flow, define what kind of wealthy person you wish to be.

Paving the Path Forward

Once you clarify your vision of wealth and how you’ll manage money, you can work toward realizing it. A little introspection and redefinition can reshape your financial future. Embrace a new mindset, and let it guide you toward financial well-being.
