Death and Taxes
Summary
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes" ?" Benjamin Franklin
Like many others, I waited until the last possible moment to send off this year's tax return. As I walked into the local post office and saw the long line, I made a familiar promise to myself: next year, I’ll avoid the last-minute rush.
Article Body
Benjamin Franklin famously said that the only certainties in life are death and taxes. Despite knowing this, I, like many diligent citizens, procrastinated until the final hours to submit my tax return. Seeing a daunting line at the post office, I vowed once more to change my ways next year.
Standing in that line, I began to question if this antiquated system was truly the best we could do. We live in an age where satellites can read license plates from space, where we can watch TV on our phones and download missed programs. Surely, there must be a more efficient method.
The original tax laws introduced in 1913 were straightforward, with tax brackets from 1 to 7 percent. Today, the IRS tax codes, regulations, and guidelines weigh in at over 9 million words. It's no wonder confusion reigns?"can anyone really master this behemoth? For perspective, the Declaration of Independence has a little over 1,300 words, the Constitution about 5,000, and even the Holy Bible has fewer than 800,000.
In 2004, the Office of Management & Budget estimated that our nation spent over $200 billion on compliance costs. At a time when our manufacturing industries fight against cheaper imports, shouldn't our leaders redirect that expenditure to job creation? Experts suggest that $200 billion could create well over 3 million jobs, boosting both consumption and tax revenues.
From the moment we wake, we're taxed. Flick a light switch (electricity taxes), run a shower (utility taxes), and those seemingly endless telephone taxes with every bill.
Perhaps the time has come for a simple Flat Rate Tax?"something universally understandable. Many countries have revitalized their economies using this straightforward and efficient tax system. Imagine completing your tax return on a single page: one flat rate for individuals, another for businesses, applicable to all income levels. Many successful countries have implemented flat taxes below 17%, with protections for lower income groups. Could it really be that simple again?
Would our leaders allow such transparency? And what about the lobbyists? Alas, a dream for another day.
