Why Retire in Thailand?
Retirement is just two years away for me, and my dream of retiring in Northeastern Thailand is about to become a reality. You might wonder why Thailand, and I’m here to share the reasons behind my choice to settle in this beautiful "land of smiles."
A Long-Standing Dream
For over 35 years, I’ve been visiting Thailand, both as a soldier and on vacations. I’ve fallen in love with its people, food, customs, and culture, and plan to spend the rest of my life there. As I prepare to retire, I’m meticulously planning every detail.
Financial Preparations
My financial outlook is promising. I’ll receive a small pension from my current government job, a military retirement fund in about four years, and Social Security benefits in around six years. Additionally, I have savings in a 401K and Thrift Savings Plan, and I expect to profit from selling my house.
Property Considerations
While I can’t legally own land as a foreigner, I plan to lease a house. I’m cautious about potential legal changes, so I’m avoiding putting property in someone else's name. Instead, I may explore a lease option or something called a usufruct?"though I need more information from an English-speaking lawyer when I visit in March 2008.
Property Search
My partner has been scouting properties, and I’ve seen pictures of promising homes priced around $50,000 USD for a three-bedroom, two-bath, two-story house. Looking forward to seeing them in person, I aim to make a purchase during my next visit.
Living Costs
My monthly pension will comfortably cover my needs. Food, drink, and utilities in Thailand are inexpensive, allowing for amenities like air conditioning and satellite TV for both Thai and English channels. Shopping is also affordable, making daily expenses manageable.
Entertainment and Healthcare
Going out is a delight, with dinner, drinks, and club visits costing less than fifty dollars for a lavish night. Healthcare in Thailand meets or exceeds U.S. or European standards, with easy access to prescription drugs and excellent medical treatment.
Legal Residency
Staying in Thailand has become simpler with more flexible visa requirements. Foreigners can now obtain easily renewable one-year visas, with a simple three-month check-in process. Despite not being able to own land, expats are welcomed for the economic benefits they bring.
A Dream Come True
Compared to other locations like Hawaii, retiring in Thailand offers a more relaxed lifestyle. The cost of living, the warmth of Thai people, and the rich culture keep me counting down the days until my retirement on April 4th, 2010.
I’m eagerly looking forward to embracing life in Thailand, where each day will be filled with the beauty and warmth that enticed me all those years ago.
