Preventing Identity Theft
If you use credit cards, drive a car, have a bank account, or have a Social Security number, you're at risk for identity theft. It's a growing concern, with over 9 million victims each year in the U.S. alone, totaling more than $50 billion in annual losses to consumers and businesses.
Identity theft can have devastating effects. Take Kathryn Lasater, a college student from San Jose, California, for instance. She received an alarming call from a bank in Omaha, Nebraska, about a home loan default in her name. Unknown to her, a fraudster had used her Social Security number to secure the loan. Kathryn then spent six months resolving the issue, which involved numerous calls and letters to clear her credit.
Unfortunately, many identity thieves evade capture. The U.S. Secret Service only investigates frauds over $2,000, allowing many credit card criminals to operate under this radar.
A highly effective way to protect against identity theft is by instituting a "credit freeze" through the nation's three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report, preventing new credit accounts from being opened without your authorization. This proactive measure, currently supported by various state laws, directly addresses the root of identity theft.
As consumer protection measures gain attention, retail industry lobbyists are pushing for changes in state and federal laws to enhance safeguards against fraud. However, the credit card industry has opposed many of these changes. A proposed federal bill, HR 3997, threatens to limit consumers' right to freeze their credit, placing control in the hands of credit bureaus.
Consumer advocates are encouraging Americans to contact their congressional representatives, urging them to oppose HR 3997. Protecting your identity begins with awareness and action?"make your voice heard.
