Omaha Rules: How to Play Omaha Poker
Overview
Omaha poker is gaining popularity, rivaling Texas Hold'em in casinos, online poker rooms, and live tournaments. While similar to Texas Hold'em in that both use community cards, Omaha requires a different strategic approach. It can be played as fixed limit, no limit, or pot limit and comes in two main versions: Omaha High and Omaha High Low.
Omaha High Rules
Initial Setup
- The player to the dealer's left posts the small blind (half the minimum bet).
- The next player posts the big blind (the full minimum bet).
Dealing the Cards
Each player receives four face-down cards, starting from the small blind and going clockwise.
First Betting Round
- Begins with the player to the left of the big blind who can call (match the minimum bet), raise (double the minimum bet), or fold (leave the hand).
- The small blind can complete the minimum bet or fold.
- The big blind can raise or check (pass the option to bet).
The Flop, Turn, and River
1. Flop: The dealer reveals three community cards, followed by a round of betting.
2. Turn: A fourth community card is dealt, with the minimum bet doubling.
3. River: The fifth and last community card is revealed, leading to the final betting round.
Showdown
Players reveal their hands. Each must use exactly two of their four cards combined with three community cards to form the best five-card hand. The highest hand wins the pot.
Omaha High Low Rules
Omaha High Low is similar to Omaha High until the showdown. The pot is split between the highest hand and the best qualifying low hand. If no low hand qualifies, the high hand wins the entire pot.
Key Terms
- Omaha 8 or Better: To qualify as a low hand, no card can be higher than an 8.
- The Wheel: The best possible low hand is A, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Splitting the Pot
Occasionally, more than two players share the pot, or one player has both the best high and low hands, winning the entire pot.
In conclusion, understanding these fundamental rules will enhance your strategies and enjoyment in both Omaha High and Omaha High Low games.
