Escape to Solitude
Discovering an Island Retreat
Have you ever felt the urge to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life? Back in March/April 1978, Mother Earth News shared a fascinating story about a couple who did just that. They purchased McLeod's Island, a 90-acre haven off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
This adventurous duo lives sustainably on the island, relying on its resources and tending to a few animals, thus minimizing their need for groceries. Their island life, however, isn't without its challenges.
Embracing the Elements
The sea's unpredictability is a constant reminder of nature's power. They describe how a serene bay can transform into a stormy chaos within moments. One December day saw the bay thaw and refreeze in mere hours. Winters here bring their own trials. In 1976, persistent thaws left the bay packed with slushy ice?"too thick for boats yet too risky to walk on?"isolating them for three months.
Conversely, a colder winter turned the bay into solid pack ice, enabling them to trek to the mainland for mail and supplies.
A Different Kind of Freedom
Many of us today enjoy the freedom of remote work, thanks to the Internet. However, this couple didn’t have such conveniences. Sadly, their current whereabouts remain unknown; perhaps the tides have taken them on new adventures.
Life demands sacrifices, and some are more significant than others. While purchasing an island might not be in my plans, their story is a reminder of the unique paths people take in search of peace.
