Using myself as an example, I'm what you might call project-oriented. I thrive by moving from task to task, always needing something to focus on. Once I complete a project, my mind shifts to the next. This tendency is evident in my trading style.
Trading can be seen as a series of projects. Each position involves analysis and decision-making, and closing a position feels like finishing a project. However, this project-focused mindset can lead to overtrading, not in terms of position size, but in trading frequency. After closing a trade, I often feel compelled to start a new one, regardless of the outcome. My constant need for a “project” drives me to find new trades.
This personality trait surfaced when I noticed my comfort in always having active market positions. The trade size doesn’t matter as long as I can check in periodically. To manage this, I adopt two strategies to prevent overtrading.
Firstly, I focus on longer-term trades. By doing so, I engage in extended projects, often lasting weeks or months. While I do occasionally trade short-term, the longer-term approach generally suits my schedule better.
Secondly, when trading short-term, I ensure to step away from the market post-trade. This break helps me clear any emotional residue and return with a fresh perspective, aiding in avoiding impulsive decisions and maintaining selectivity based on my analytics.
This is just one example of psychological challenges in trading. We all have behavioral patterns from our personal lives that can influence trading, both positively and negatively. Brett Steenbarger's excellent book, The Psychology of Trading, explores how these patterns manifest and offers strategies to address them. The key is to observe ourselves objectively. Self-awareness is half the battle.
