Article:

Throughout America's 230-year history, it sometimes seems the government has strayed from its foundational purpose: to serve as a reflection of the people's will, not as an authority dictating what it believes is best for them.

A recent example is the Internet Gambling Ban signed by President Bush. This law prohibits banks and credit card companies from processing transactions for online gambling?"games like roulette, blackjack, and poker that millions of Americans enjoy daily. While these games are harmless for most, a minority may develop addictions. Rather than addressing this issue through education and support, the government has chosen to impose a blanket ban on all citizens.

This is not the first instance of the government acting against public preference. In the early 1900s, the prohibition of alcohol was implemented in an effort to curb health and mental issues stemming from excessive drinking. Instead of educating the populace on the dangers of alcohol abuse, the government opted for a complete ban. Ironically, this only increased alcohol consumption and gave rise to illegal production by organized crime. Eventually, the government recognized this error and repealed the law.

Similarly, the ongoing war on drugs?"initiated in the early 1980s?"has been another costly policy with questionable results. Despite billions in taxpayer money spent annually, drug prices have only risen, leading many addicts to resort to crime to support their habits. Prisons are overcrowded with individuals whose only crime is drug possession. Had drugs been regulated like any other industry, the government could have used tax revenue to fund social programs, such as education and universal healthcare.

To clarify, I am not advocating for the legalization of hard drugs. However, the current approach is ineffective. Conversely, I fully support the legalization of online casino gambling. If I choose to play blackjack or poker from home, what right does the government have to prevent me? It's contradictory that online gambling is restricted, yet one can easily visit a local casino in person.

Enforcing this ban would require expensive software and hardware to monitor banking transactions, funded by taxpayer dollars. Instead, the government could tax online casinos or control them directly, using the profits to help impoverished or homeless citizens.

The American government must reconsider its approach of treating citizens like children. Otherwise, it's time for the American people to demand a change in governance.
