Is Travel Insurance Necessary for a UK-Based Holiday?
Summary
Just over a month ago, my boyfriend and I planned a special trip to Edinburgh to celebrate our five-year anniversary. Living in Dorset, we wanted to maximize our time enjoying the city rather than traveling to it. Therefore, we chose to fly and enlisted a travel agent to organize our week-long holiday. Imagine my surprise when I noticed a £27.50 charge for travel insurance on the quote. We were heading to Edinburgh, not Pittsburgh!
Article Body
Initially, I was taken aback by the suggestion of travel insurance for a UK trip. Edinburgh has hospitals and is relatively close, so why would we need extra coverage? However, over a cup of hot chocolate, I began to rethink the idea.
Holiday mishaps can occur anywhere, even within the UK. Here's a list of potential issues:
1. Illness before departure could force us to cancel our non-refundable flights and hotel.
2. My grandfather's health is fragile; should he worsen, I’d cancel our plans.
3. Either of us might be summoned for jury duty.
4. Flight delays or cancellations are common, possibly necessitating an overnight airport stay.
5. Airlines frequently lose luggage.
6. If I lost the digital camera my boyfriend gifted me, replacement costs would be high.
I then considered our Home & Contents insurance. Would it cover luggage or the camera in the UK? Upon checking the policy, I found it only covered listed personal possessions. Adding the camera would require a call, and our no-claims discount could be jeopardized, causing premiums to rise beyond the current £305 a year.
Upon reflection, £27.50 for travel insurance didn’t seem so excessive.
Despite deciding that travel insurance was wise, I wasn't ready to pay the travel agent's price without exploring options. Online searches initially yielded nothing, but soon I found a single-trip UK travel policy £10 cheaper than the travel agent's offer.
Reading the small print was essential. Fortunately, all potential issues were covered with the exception that trips under 25 miles from home or less than two nights wouldn't qualify. Otherwise, the only downside was a £30 excess fee per claim.
Content with the policy and our decision, I purchased the travel insurance right then and there.
