The situation is particularly dire for those earning less than $35,000 annually, with 30% having no liquid savings whatsoever. Alan Kopit, a legal editor at lawyers.com, underscores the importance of having three to six months' worth of living expenses saved, regardless of income. Without this safety net, households are vulnerable to financial crises from unexpected events like job loss or medical emergencies.
For many savers, building a "rainy day" fund for emergencies is the main motivation, with 73% of respondents citing this reason. Additionally, nearly 29% of adults save for vacations, and 15% save for special events like weddings or birthdays. This latter figure rises to 25% among women aged 18 to 34.
Kopit advises that there’s no wrong reason to save money, but prioritizing is key. He recommends first establishing a fund to cover essential living expenses in case of income loss. Once that is secured, you can focus on other savings goals, such as vacations or new purchases.
