In Khon Kaen, with my girlfriend’s car, we head to Tesco Lotus, which is akin to a massive Walmart. It's a one-stop shop for everything from clothing to groceries.
Shopping malls are a relatively new concept for Thai people, who traditionally favored small local stores. Now, they enjoy the convenience of filling a shopping cart and simply charging their purchases at checkout.
Interestingly, Thai shoppers approach the aisles much like they do the roads?"it's a whirlwind of activity, yet surprisingly orderly. There's no frustration, but definitely a unique style to their shopping.
When I shop, it’s either for a quick grab of a couple of items or an extensive weekly or monthly run. I stick to a plan: either heading straight to the needed items or methodically moving up and down each aisle.
Aisles are generally well-marked, allowing two carts to pass with ease. Most people adhere to the flow of foot traffic as they would on a street?"except here, it's a free-for-all.
Thai shoppers approach this differently. They’ll casually drift between aisles, stopping to chat and inadvertently blocking the path for others. If you need them to move, you'll likely receive a glare.
Sometimes, people park their carts at the entrance of an aisle without concern for others trying to get past. It's all about who’s slightly ahead in this cart race, reminiscent of their driving habits.
Forming straight lines at the checkout is another concept that seems foreign. As you approach the register, it's every person for themselves. Stay vigilant, or someone may sneak in front of you.
Once you’ve checked out, brace yourself for another bout of managed chaos in the parking lot as you merge back onto the busy streets.
Shopping in Thailand isn’t for the faint-hearted. It requires patience, determination, and a willingness to embrace the vibrant atmosphere. Enjoy the ride!
