Is VoIP Legal?
I've been in the telecom industry for 12 years, and during that time, I've spoken with my mom at least weekly. She often asks about my work, referring to it as "that little telephone thing." About six months ago, she called me, excited to share something she’d heard on her morning talk radio program. She wrote it down, as she still believes calling rates drop after 5 PM. As she searched for her note, I could hear the familiar sound of her rotary phone hitting the counter and papers rustling. Finally, she was ready to reveal her discovery: “V-O-I-P.”
My mom asked if I’d heard of VoIP. I laughed, telling her, “Yes, that’s what I do.” She simply wanted to make sure I knew about this "new way of calling" that was supposedly gaining popularity. We shifted the conversation elsewhere, but it got me thinking.
A couple of weeks ago, I called my mom, only to be met with her asking, “Where have you been?” I explained that I’d been working on a VoIP product for small businesses with existing phone systems. I told her how it could save companies up to 70% on their monthly phone bills. Her response? “Well, Lisa, is what you’re doing legal?”
Her question amused me. I assured her I’d soon find out if it wasn’t. My parents’ generation (ages 60-80) often finds new innovations suspicious, if not outright illegal or scams.
Interestingly, senior citizens are the fastest-growing group accessing the internet today. They also possess significant discretionary income. VoIP providers are missing out by not educating seniors about the substantial savings VoIP can offer.
For now, my mom might think I’m involved in something dubious, but she recently sent me a magazine clipping with a note asking, “Google?"have you heard of them?” Her curiosity never ceases to amuse me.
