The Microsoft DirectBand Network broadcasts this content over a leased radio spectrum, built in collaboration with Infinity Broadcasting and ClearChannel. This allows data to be transmitted across 100 metropolitan areas in the U.S. and five major Canadian cities, reaching smartwatches and other SPOT-enabled devices through over 200 information channels.
To start using a SPOT-enabled smartwatch, users can manage their devices through MSN Direct. Simply create a profile using a free .NET account, and choose the specific channels you want on your watch.
Several companies, including Fossil, Suunto, Swatch, and Tissot, manufacture SPOT-enabled watches. While they come in various styles and sizes, they share common key components:
- Printed Circuit Board (PCB): This multi-layered fiberglass board directs electricity through tiny embedded wires to various smartwatch components.
- Piezoelectric Ceramic Crystal: Acts as a minuscule speaker driver for sound production.
- ARM 7 TDMI Processor: The central processor serving as the watch's "brain."
- DirectBand Radio Receiver Chip: Connects the watch to MSN Direct, crucial for its functionality.
Like computers, smartwatches require memory, equipped with 384 KB of RAM and 512 KB of ROM. They run on rechargeable batteries, with lifespan varying by model and usage.
Charging is easy with an inductive charging coil that connects with a charging plate on the watch stand. The battery recharges through induction whenever the watch and stand make contact.
As technologies advance, SPOT technology is evolving to integrate into upcoming smart objects, making smartwatches an essential part of our daily lives.
