Steps Toward Greener Computing

Dell Inc., for instance, is leading efforts to establish computer recycling programs, pledging to plant one tree per computer sold. Since 2004, Dell has recycled computers from any brand if new equipment was purchased from them.
PC World is also working on a Green PC with reduced power consumption. However, most environmental damage occurs during manufacturing. A 2004 UN University report highlighted that an average PC consumes ten times its weight in raw materials during production. As most manufacturing happens outside the U.S., environmentally responsible practices need to be global. Companies like Dell and Gateway might need to partner only with environmentally friendly manufacturers, though this could initially drive up costs.
Refurbishing and conscientious manufacturing are crucial steps in mitigating the environmental impact of computers, fostering a more sustainable future.
