Currently, the most prominent and fully operational satellite navigation system is the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the United States. GPS involves 24 to 27 satellites orbiting approximately 20,000 kilometers above the Earth in six different planes.
Russia offers an alternative with their GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System). Since its first satellite launch in 1982, GLONASS became fully functional by 1995. However, economic challenges reduced its satellite count to 12. Efforts are underway to restore full functionality, with aims to partner with India by 2010.
The European Union's initiative, EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System), is designed to enhance GPS and GLONASS precision. By using three satellites, it aims to provide accuracy within five meters and was expected to begin functioning in 2006.
Additionally, the European Space Agency is developing Galileo, a GPS alternative. Galileo will enable receivers to combine signals from 30 Galileo satellites and 28 GPS satellites, offering highly accurate positions.
Several countries have planned their own satellite navigation systems. France's system is known as DORIS (Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite), while China's system is called BEIDOU. However, these are not yet on par with GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo.
As technology progresses, more countries are working on launching their satellite navigation systems, promising more advancements and accuracy in the future.
