Later video cards came in AT-ISA, PCI, and VL bus configurations. Newer vintage computers often featured VL slots and/or PCI slots. If a vintage computer supports the PCI bus, it offers enhanced performance and should be utilized when possible.
Physical Characteristics of Add-in Cards
Vintage computer add-in cards can also be categorized by their dimensions: short, medium, or full-size cards. These descriptions, along with the less common XT height, relate to the physical size of the cards. However, these terms were somewhat arbitrary, with no strict industry standards.
A Blended Transition
Over time, vintage computers featured a mix of ISA and PCI buses on their motherboards. Eventually, the ISA standard faded from use altogether.
