What Are Layers in Photoshop?

At first glance, layers might seem complex, but they're straightforward compared to other Photoshop functions. They allow you to work on specific sections without impacting the entire image. If you need to redo part of your work, you can simply discard that layer.
Creating and Managing Layers
Photoshop often automatically creates new layers for certain changes, but you can also do it manually. To add a new layer, navigate to the top menu, click "Layer," then "New." A fresh, empty layer will appear in your Layers palette. The highlighted layer is the active one, meaning it’s the layer you're currently editing. To switch to a different layer, click on it to activate it.

Organizing Layers

- In Photoshop CS, link your layers, then select "New Set from Linked" in the Layers box side menu.
- In Photoshop 7, choose each layer and click "Group with Previous" from the Layer option in the top menu. Alternatively, use the folder icon at the bottom of the Layers palette and drag layers into it. Click the collapse arrow to hide layers within the folder.
To delete a set folder, select it, then click "Layer," "Delete," "Set," and choose either "Set and Contents" or "Set Only."
Some Photoshop versions require Shift-Click on the bottom folder icon to create a set. In CS2, align layers with View > Show > Smart Guides.
