Protecting CDs and DVDs from unauthorized copying involves various methods, often by deviating from standard formats. This article explores the use of dummy files and illegal sectors, alongside other protection techniques.
Dummy Files on CDs
CD-ROMs typically use the ISO9660 file system to organize data into files and folders. Often, a more advanced system like Joliet overlays this to overcome certain limitations. A common protection tactic involves embedding fake information within the file system. Early software duplication tools copied files individually, creating a new file system on the target media and eliminating the fake data, rendering the copied disc unusable.
Illegal Sectors on CDs
The primary data unit on a CD-ROM is the sector. Each sector (MODE1) consists of 2048 bytes of user data and 304 bytes of structural details. Error Detection Code (EDC) and Error Correction Code (ECC) fields help drives identify and correct errors.
Copy protection can involve creating sectors with incorrect EDC/ECC fields during manufacturing. Protection software attempts to read these sectors, expecting errors. Early software and hardware couldn't replicate such sectors, making unauthorized copies transparent when these distinctive sectors became readable.
With modern equipment, these methods are less effective, as current technology can reproduce raw sectors. An updated approach involves using expanses of unreadable sectors with small readable segments. Most duplication software, when faced with unreadable sectors, will skip over intervals, assuming all are faulty.
DVD Protection
DVDs often use CSS (Content Scramble System) for protection, a prevalent and effective method. CSS employs a straightforward encryption algorithm, using a unique 40-bit key for each DVD. At the disc's start, this key is further encrypted with multiple potential keys for DVD players. When inserted, the DVD player scans through its keys to find a match among the 400+ keys on the disc. The intricate process remains confidential to protect against hacking.
By employing these strategies, manufacturers aim to deter unauthorized copying, although ongoing advancements in technology continue to present challenges.
