Understanding how computers "talk" isn't as complex as one might think. Modern computers use software that transforms text into speech, delivering information through speakers or headsets. This capability is known as speech recognition.
To delve deeper, the process of generating artificial speech is called speech synthesis, facilitated by TTS (text-to-speech) systems. These systems consist of a front end and a back end. The front end processes the input text, converting it into linguistic symbols, while the back end turns these symbols into speech waves, audible through speakers or headsets.
The front end has two primary tasks: First, it recognizes numbers and abbreviations, translating them into their word equivalents. Then, it assigns sounds?"phonetic descriptions?"to the text, incorporating pauses and intonations, dividing the text into phrases and sentences.
Meanwhile, the back end, also known as the synthesizer, transforms these phonetic transcriptions into actual sound, creating the spoken output we hear.
