Article Body:

In my profession, I frequently create PowerPoint presentations. These range from individual slides, such as diagrams or case studies, to complete templates or full presentations. Most of my work is for my day job as an in-house designer, but I sometimes take on freelance clients who need presentation enhancements. Over the years, I've built and refined hundreds of PowerPoint files.

Though some view PowerPoint as a necessary evil, it's an integral tool in the corporate world. To counteract negative stereotypes, I apply traditional design principles, helping my company and clients stand out from the competition.

We attend 120 trade shows annually, presenting at each one, and utilize Macromedia's Breeze for numerous online demos. The impression our PowerPoint makes is crucial, often preceding even a brochure.

PowerPoint is a staple for sales professionals, with an entire industry built around the presentation expert concept. It's used for downloadable or live web demos and for sharing ideas among team members. Given its widespread use, PowerPoint design becomes a vital aspect of a company's identity.

From local shops to global brands like Apple and Starbucks, every business benefits from a distinct identity, a unique look and feel that differentiates them. This encompasses corporate colors, typography, illustration styles, and recurring graphic elements, extending to stationery, trade show graphics, packaging, advertising, and PowerPoint.

PowerPoint's prevalence represents a communication shift, though this evolution can sometimes hinder clarity. Like texting or small banner ads, information is often reduced to buzzwords, stripping meaningful content. Bullet points become rapid-fire metadata, vague and cryptic.

Example buzzwords:

- Leverage existing technology
- Realize rapid ROI
- Streamlined implementation

These can be as vague as:

- Parsed cabbage flux capacitor
- Disco glitter manifestation
- Expressive giraffe BLT

Through overuse, these phrases lose their impact, like grass trampled by a crowd at a concert.

Just as a good logo supports an identity program, well-designed PowerPoint goes beyond tired bullet points. It enhances the speaker's message, personality, and purpose with creativity and unique phrasing, steering clear of clichéd buzzwords.

Flashy backgrounds and animations won't matter if the message lacks substance. When I design PowerPoint, I focus on how the audience will engage with the content, ensuring it resonates and reinforces the presenter's core message.
