Article Body

In the era spanning the late fifth to early sixth centuries, a legendary British figure captured the hearts and imaginations of many. This was the time of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in the illustrious Camelot.

King Arthur engaged both in battle against Saxons and in a more personal struggle against Lancelot for the affection of his beloved Guinevere. Queen Guinevere, renowned for her beauty and desirability, captivated Arthur’s heart in what could be described as a May-December romance?"an era marked by both passionate love and political turmoil.

This epoch, known simply as Camelot, was magical and seemingly destined to reappear through the ages. Centuries later, a new Camelot emerged with the presidency of John F. Kennedy. Capturing global attention, Kennedy and his vivacious wife Jackie represented a youthful, idealistic couple striving for a better society. They became the embodiment of hope, leading a nation forward in time, history, and compassion.

Now, not even a century after Jack and Jackie, the spirit of Camelot could be resurfacing. For those old enough to remember that charismatic couple, it feels like a dream come alive once more?"a vision of love and grace raising their children in the White House.

Times have changed since then. Many positive advancements have realized some of the dreams of Jack and Bobby Kennedy, while others have fallen short. Life’s conveniences have increased, yet it is often more complex. Modern families often require two incomes to maintain the standard of living achievable by one during Kennedy's time.

Gone are the six-inch black-and-white TVs, replaced by 52-inch flat-screen LCDs. Cable has replaced rabbit ears, and hundreds of channels have supplanted the original big three networks. Sirius Radio has evolved from FM, which once replaced AM. Around-the-clock news channels like FOX, MSNBC, and CNN have taken over from Huntley and Brinkley. Despite progress, complacency has replaced the hope of Jack and Jackie's era.

Large corporate stores have overtaken mom-and-pop shops, transforming local economies. Yet, are we truly better off? With increasing homelessness and more children going to bed hungry, is this progress? When veterans, the elderly, and the sick must choose between food and medicine, can we call this an improvement?

As half of marriages end in divorce, and many children are raised in single-parent homes, the question remains: can we do better? Can we reignite the dream of Camelot? America stands disenchanted. Can we reclaim the dream and recharge the dreamers? We long for another Walt Disney and another John Kennedy to lead us forward. Can we make America better?

Senator Barack Obama and his wife, the graceful Michelle Obama, believe we can. Do you share their vision? Looking at this young, educated, caring couple and their dreams for the United States, it seems plausible that we might once again bask in the glow of Camelot. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of America's first Camelot era, is hopeful.

Has the Age of Camelot returned in our lifetime? Perhaps it has.
