Step Away From the Computer: Prevent a Mental Meltdown
Summary

Do I Read a Technical Manual Tonight, or 'The Lord of the Rings'?
Let's start with a disclaimer: this article is a bit of a departure from my usual writing style. It's essentially a tired technology enthusiast venting.
Technology surrounds my life?"computers, data communication, wireless and wired systems, mobile devices, firewalls, security assessments, and more. I'm so entrenched in tech and business that I sometimes struggle to choose between diving into a technical manual or enjoying a sci-fi/fantasy novel.
I love my work and have no plans to change, but even checking the time nearly triggered a mental meltdown today. This week has been particularly stressful. I've written eight major proposals, worked on an external security assessment report, engaged in countless calls, and stayed up into the early hours (it’s 2 AM on Saturday as I write this).
Keeping Time in Sync: A Challenge
This morning, seeing the time on my desktop was all it took for me to feel overwhelmed. Between all the laptops, clocks (digital and analog), stereos, TVs, cable boxes, DVD players, and other devices, there are 28 time-displaying gadgets in my home. With a mere five-minute discrepancy between them, I nearly freaked out. You'd think synchronizing these would be simple with all our technology, yet they remain unsynchronized!
Although this isn't about clocks, it was "time" that set me off. Like many, I find time elusive. Einstein might have something to say about this. Beyond time, there's the question: how much tech overload can our brains handle before they implode? Family and friends often ask how I remember so much about computers. I wonder the same sometimes.
Sometimes, I yearn to escape from all things electronic?"the spinning fans, clicking hard drives, buzzing monitors (even flat panels), and the incessant beeping of UPS systems, thanks to unreliable electricity.
Vacation Time: Technology-Free Zone
I've spent my life in the tech industry. It took five years of my wife’s complaints about bringing gadgets on vacations before I finally saw the light. Leaving technology behind on our first gadget-free vacation felt like a massive weight lifted. It was so freeing that when my wife asked where the laptop was, it took her all day to believe I left it at home.
I'm sure I'm not alone in having these "moments." My New Year's resolution was to simplify my life. Although progress has been slow, I'm determined to find balance?"even if it's challenging.
Conclusion
If you feel like sending me a bill after reading this, I wouldn't blame you. It reads like a therapy session. I've decided to take a break from technology after posting this. Now, I’m off to get some much-needed rest.
