Omaha Rules: How to Play Omaha Poker
Overview
This comprehensive guide will teach you how to play both Omaha High and Omaha High-Low poker, helping you to understand the rules and strategies for each variation.
Introduction
Omaha poker is gaining popularity and is quickly becoming a favorite alongside Texas Hold'em in casinos, online poker sites, and live tournaments. Although the rules of Omaha are similar to Texas Hold'em, each game requires its own unique strategy. Omaha can be played in three formats: fixed limit, no limit, or pot limit, and it offers two main variations: Omaha High and Omaha High-Low.
Omaha High Rules
The game starts with the player to the dealer's immediate left posting the small blind, usually half of the minimum bet. For example, in a $4/$8 game, the small blind would be $2. The next player posts the big blind, equal to the minimum bet ($4 in this case).
Once blinds are posted, the dealer deals four face-down cards to each player, starting from the small blind and moving clockwise. The player to the left of the big blind starts the betting round, with options to call, raise, or fold. Calling requires a bet equal to the minimum, raising doubles the minimum bet, and folding forfeits the hand.
The first round continues until reaching the small blind, who can complete their bet to match the minimum, and the big blind, who can raise or check. Following this, the dealer places three face-up community cards on the table?"the flop.
A new betting round begins after the flop, maintaining the minimum bet of $4. Next, a fourth community card?"the turn?"is dealt, starting another round of betting with the increased minimum of $8.
Finally, the fifth community card?"the river?"is placed, leading to the final betting round at the $8 minimum. After this, players enter the showdown, revealing their hands. Each player must use exactly two of their four cards and three community cards to form the best five-card hand. The highest hand wins the pot in Omaha High.
Omaha High-Low Rules
Omaha High-Low follows the same format as Omaha High, up until the showdown. Here, the pot is split between the player with the highest hand and the player with the best qualifying low hand. If no one qualifies for a low hand, the entire pot goes to the highest hand.
Commonly known as Omaha 8 or Better, a low hand must have no cards higher than an 8. The best possible low hand is the "wheel": A, 2, 3, 4, 5. Aces can act as high or low, and flushes and straights don't count against a low.
Occasionally, the pot splits between more than two players, or one player wins both high and low, taking the entire pot.
