How Many Macs Are Too Many?

Summary:
For Mac enthusiasts, Macs aren't just computers?"they're cherished companions. Mike Wendland shares his struggle: deciding when to part with beloved Macs that have been replaced by newer models.

---

Please don’t think I’m greedy?"I’m just attached to my Macs.

I suspect I’m not alone. The more Macs I acquire, the harder it becomes to part with them. As soon as I buy one, I find myself eyeing the next. Although I’ve sold a few over the years, lately, I’m starting to hoard them.

You know those stories about people with countless cats? I fear I might become like that?"with Macs.

Currently, I have quite the collection: a dual processor G5 with dual monitors, a 15-inch PowerBook, a 15-inch MacBook Pro, a 20-inch G5 iMac, and?"thanks to work?"a new 17-inch MacBook Pro.

There’s no way I can use them all, but it’s nearly impossible to part with any.

I should certainly sell the PowerBook and have attempted to list it on eBay or Craigslist twice, only to back out. The new Intel MacBooks aren’t compatible with my Verizon Broadband Access PC card, whereas the PowerBook is. So, I convince myself I might need it for an upcoming vacation where internet access might be lacking.

Then there’s the new 15-inch MacBook Pro I purchased in March. A month later, my employer surprised me with a 17-inch version. Rationally, I should sell the 15-inch, but it’s mine. What if they take back the 17-inch? So it remains stored in a carry case?"just in case.

I don’t really use the big G5 with two monitors anymore either. Yet, just thinking about selling them makes me uneasy. It feels akin to selling a child?"or giving up my dog. I simply can’t do it.

The iMac was easy to part with; I’ve passed it on to my wife, who’s now as hooked on Macs as I am.

Still, I wonder?"how many Macs are too many?
