Big Brother Is Not Just a TV Show

Monday, Oct 1, 2007

As a retired police officer, I've witnessed the reality of George Orwell's "1984" unfold. I recall an incident in 1970 when an agent bragged about acquiring sensitive information, exclaiming, "Big Brother is here," with a laugh that sent chills down my spine. Little did we know then how true that statement was becoming.

Many of us were unaware when figures like Martin Luther King Jr. were surveilled for political reasons, or when journalists like Brit Hume of Fox News were shadowed for political gain.

Understanding 'Big Brother' Through a Simple Analogy

Big Brother sees us, the public, in simple terms: like wild hogs. Let me explain how to catch wild hogs. First, find a trail they use or a place they feed. Then, start leaving food there daily. Initially, they avoid it due to human scent and unfamiliarity. But gradually, hunger overcomes fear.

After they're used to the food, set up a short fence. They'll be wary but not for long. Continue adding fence sections until only a small opening remains. Eventually, close the gate, and now you’ve captured them.

Historical Warning Signs

Before President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society, men like Mussolini, Marx, Hitler, and Stalin had similar control-driven dreams. Today, figures like Bin Laden and Ahmadinejad operate under the guise of fundamentalism, pursuing power in troubling ways.

We’ve been warned: learn from history or risk repeating it. But have we learned? Do we stay silent as our government erodes personal rights under the guise of national security?

Modern-Day Surveillance and Privacy Concerns

Consider this: can we even call it privacy when Google can capture our images at will, or when cell companies track our locations? Our cars, through black boxes, record our journeys. Our ISPs monitor our emails and browsing habits, while companies like Microsoft quietly access our computers.

Everywhere we go?"lounges, casinos, malls, offices, even churches?"hidden cameras watch us. On the street or in parks, surveillance never stops, recorded by public and private entities alike.

The Consequences of Complacency

Worse yet, think about those trapped in poverty who couldn't escape the metaphorical pigpen, relying on public housing with no way out. Some, lost to the cycle of dependency, resort to crime out of desperation, especially when the state fails them.

Reflecting on Our Future

Now's the time to seriously consider what kind of world we want tomorrow. Let's plan a path forward from this uncertain landscape, before it’s too late.
