This anxiety often stems from a lack of knowledge about effectively managing their systems.Whenever I build or reinstall Windows on a computer, I always partition the hard drive into C: and D:. Partitioning involves dividing one hard drive into sections that the computer perceives as separate drives. The C drive is designated as the Primary Partition, while the D drive, and any subsequent letters, are considered Logical Partitions. In Windows 98, you can use the FDISK utility on a bootable floppy, whereas Windows XP includes the partitioning option in the installation process.
Partitioning is beneficial because it protects your data. If Windows encounters an issue, your files on the D drive remain safe, since Windows resides on the C drive. Essentially, your computer behaves as though it has multiple hard drives rather than just one.
In addition to partitioning, consider investing in an external hard drive or another storage solution like a Zip or tape drive. This acts as a safeguard in case your partition becomes corrupted. I advise clients to back up critical data on an external drive and disconnect it after each session. This precaution ensures that in the event of a system crash or cyberattack, your vital data remains undisturbed.
