Sony's anticipated release of the PlayStation 3 in Japan has been postponed from spring to August due to production challenges, particularly concerning the Blu-ray Disc drive.
A Sony representative mentioned that they are awaiting final specifications for the PS3's technology components, including the Blu-ray drive, and the video and sound input/output systems.
This delay impacted Sony's stock. Last week, Merrill Lynch reported that the PS3 launch might be delayed by six to twelve months, and initial material costs could reach approximately $900 per unit.
Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst at Nomura Securities, predicts the PS3 will retail for about 50,000 yen (approximately $420). He suggests that the timing of the U.S. launch is less crucial as long as it happens before Christmas.
Sakurai anticipates an early summer release to coincide with the peak sales period in July, when schools are on vacation.
Details about the PS3 remain uncertain. Japanese analysts estimate its price between 40,000 and 300,000 yen. The console will support up to seven players simultaneously and is equipped with the Cell chip, offering more power than Intel's Pentium 4.
Additional features include an upgraded graphics chip, a built-in Ethernet port, and Blu-ray?"a next-generation DVD format supported by Sony.
Due to delays in finalizing the technology specs, game developers are creating games based on speculative specifications. "Game makers are developing games according to their guesses on what the final specifications might be," said BNP Paribas analyst, Takeshi Tajima.
The PS3 will compete with Microsoft's recently released Xbox 360 and Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console, set to release later this year.
