Getting Started
When setting up a home lab for your CCNA and CCNP studies, figuring out your budget is crucial. Should you invest in routers and maybe a less expensive 1900 switch, even though exams like 640-801 (CCNA), 640-821 (Intro), and 640-811 (ICND) emphasize familiarity with a 2950 switch? Consider whether to include a frame relay switch or an access server.
Don’t feel the need to buy everything at once. With thoughtful planning, start small for your Intro studies, add more for the ICND, and further expand for the CCNP.
Your budget plays a role, but even if it's modest, remember you're getting hands-on experience with real Cisco equipment. Plus, you can sell your gear once you pass your exams, effectively "renting" it for a time.
Lab Setups
One Router
With one router, your configurations will be basic, but this setup lets you get familiar with Cisco hardware. Practice setting passwords, the hostname, and using global configuration commands. You’ll have started with real equipment, despite limitations.Two Routers
