Cisco Certification: Making a Great Impression in Your Job Interview
Summary
Chris Bryant, CCIE12933, shares tips for CCNAs to excel in job interviews and highlights common pitfalls to avoid.
Article
Congratulations on earning your Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification! Now, what’s next?
CCNA holders typically fall into three categories: those entering the IT field, those transitioning from LAN to WAN roles (like I once did), and those already in WAN roles aiming for advancement.
No matter where you stand, there’s one hurdle you must overcome: the job interview. Some CCNAs excel in interviews, while others struggle. Having experienced both sides, I have some advice to help you succeed.
Key Tips for a Successful Interview
Confidence Over Cockiness:
The CCNA is an impressive achievement, marking the start of your journey. Approach your interview with confidence, but remember, no one knows everything?"even as a CCIE, I don’t know it all.
Answer with Assurance:
It’s okay not to have all the answers. If you studied thoroughly, gained hands-on experience, and understood complex topics like binary math and NAT, you’ll do well.
Keep Learning:
Don’t halt your studies after passing the exam. Knowledge fades if not practiced. Take a short break, celebrate your success, then continue reviewing CCNA topics and begin preparing for your CCNP. Many newly certified CCNAs forget what they’ve learned because they stop studying.
Prepare Like It’s an Exam:
Treat the interview as you would a CCNA exam. Preparation is key, and there won’t be any multiple-choice questions to fall back on.
Start Early:
Don’t wait until after passing your exam to prepare for interviews. While studying, gain hands-on experience, either through classes or personal practice with equipment. Seek insights from industry professionals. These efforts will showcase you as a strong candidate during your interview.
Good luck!
