Article:
When pursuing your Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification, selecting the order of your exams is an important step. Cisco offers both a three-exam and a four-exam path, allowing you to choose the sequence in which you attempt them.
While each candidate's path may differ, here are some suggestions based on personal experiences and feedback from CCNPs globally.
Starting with BSCI
Your foundational knowledge from the CCNA will greatly assist you with the BSCI (Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks, 642-801) exam. Many candidates start with this exam, and it's often recommended. Although you'll encounter new topics like BGP, much of the content will be familiar from your CCNA studies.
Middle Exams: BCMSN and BCRAN
The next exams are BCMSN (Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks, 642-811) and BCRAN (Building Cisco Remote Access Networks, 642-821). While the order isn't fixed, most candidates prefer taking the BCMSN (switching) exam before BCRAN (remote access).
Ending with CIT
It's advisable to save the CIT (Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting) exam for last. This exam requires you to apply the skills acquired during your CCNA and previous CCNP exams. Candidates generally find more success with CIT when it's taken last, though exceptions exist.
If You Choose the Three-Exam Path
For those opting for the three-exam route, you'll tackle the Composite exam (642-891), which merges the BSCI and BCMSN exams. Starting with this exam is beneficial, as it integrates well with your CCNA skills. Follow this with the BCRAN exam and conclude with the Troubleshooting exam.
In any path you choose, pursuing the CCNP is a wise decision. This certification rigorously tests your networking skills and provides a strong foundation for advancing to the CCIE.
