VTP Operating Modes
Understanding VTP modes is vital as they control which switches can create, modify, or delete VLANs. By default, VTP operates in "Server" mode.
- Server Mode: Allows creation, modification, and deletion of VLANs. At least one switch must be in this mode for VLAN creation. This is the default mode for Cisco switches.
- Client Mode: These switches cannot create, modify, or delete VLANs. They listen to VTP updates and adjust accordingly when notified of changes.
- Transparent Mode: Switches in this mode do not actively participate in the VTP domain like Servers or Clients. They do not sync databases or advertise VLANs, making any VLANs locally significant. They do, however, forward VTP advertisements to other switches.
