Overview
A proxy, also known as a proxy server or application-level gateway, is a technology used by businesses and individuals to manage their network and Internet access. It acts as an intermediary between a company's local network and the Internet or other large networks.
How Proxies Work
These servers begin their role when a computer within the local network requests incoming data. The proxy intercepts the data, ensuring it enters through one of its ports, and then forwards it to the requesting unit via another port. This process prevents direct access between networks, safeguarding sensitive information from hackers and unauthorized users by hiding internal addresses.
Types of Proxies
Proxies are generally categorized into two types:
1. HTTP Proxy: Serves as a gateway for Internet access.
2. SMTP Proxy: Functions as a gateway for email communication.
In addition to controlling external network access, proxies can also restrict internal network users from accessing certain online resources. This capability is particularly beneficial for network administrators who need to block access to inappropriate websites.

Proxies can cache web pages, allowing the main computer to store copies of downloaded websites on its hard drive. When a computer in the local network requests an external URL, a copy is saved. If another computer requests the same URL, the proxy retrieves the stored version instead of fetching it anew from the Internet, thereby reducing the time needed to access information.
