INSAT-4A: A Landmark Launch for Indian Space Technology

Indian space scientists have successfully received signals from INSAT-4A after its launch aboard the Ariane-5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. The Master Control Facility in Hassan, Karnataka, is now managing the satellite's operations.

INSAT-4A marks the inaugural launch in the INSAT-4 series. It is equipped with 12 high-power Ku-band transponders designed to enhance direct-to-home (DTH) television services, alongside 12 C-band transponders to boost communication and DTH capabilities.
Specifications
At a liftoff weight of 3,080 kg, INSAT-4A is the heaviest satellite deployed by the Indian Space Agency to date. By 2007, the INSAT system is expected to feature approximately 225 active transponders across various frequency bands, offering a capacity of up to 11 GBPS with current technology.
Collaborative Launch
Alongside INSAT-4A, Ariane also launched the MSG-2 weather satellite for the European Organization EUMETSAT. This mission marks the 12th satellite launch for ISRO using the European launcher. ISRO invested an additional USD 50 million for the launch cost through ArianeSpace, the European Commercial Launch Service provider.
Partnerships and Future Plans
Tata-Sky, a collaboration between the Tata Group and the Rupert Murdoch-owned STAR group, has reserved all the Ku-band transponders on INSAT-4A, a satellite valued at Rs. 350 crore and developed by the Indian Space Research Organization.
Looking ahead, ISRO has plans for INSAT-4B, which will also carry 12 Ku-band and 12 C-band transponders. This satellite is slated to be launched via India’s own Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

The Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system is a collaborative venture involving the Department of Space (DOS), Department of Telecommunications (DOT), India Meteorological Department (IMD), All India Radio (AIR), and Doordarshan. Since the establishment of the INSAT Coordination Committee (ICC) in 1983, INSAT has grown into one of the largest domestic satellite systems in the Asia Pacific, with eight operational satellites, including INSAT 2E, 3E, 3B, 3C, KALPANA-1, GAST-2, and EDUSAT.
