The Voice of Reason
As an investment portfolio manager, I frequently make phone calls to different departments within our financial organization. A few months ago, I reached out to the accounting department, which is located on another floor of our building.
To my surprise, instead of the usual voice, I was greeted by a warm "Accounts Receivable, this is Regina speaking." Curious about the change, I asked about Ralph, the accounts receivable manager I had known but never quite got along with. It turned out Regina was his successor. This was welcome news?"not just because of her pleasant voice, but also because Ralph and I never clicked.
After making my inquiry, I ended the call and didn't think much of it. A few days later, I needed to contact accounts receivable again. During the call, I sensed a hint of flirtation in Regina’s tone. As a bachelor, her captivating voice piqued my interest, though I doubted it was serious since she had never seen me. I chalked it up to friendliness and continued with my work.
The third call revealed more. Regina asked if I had been on the second floor with the mutual funds manager the previous week. Indeed, I had, so I realized she knew what I looked like. Her overt flirtation left me intrigued. Trying to focus on work was difficult, especially with thoughts of meeting this intriguing woman.
The next day, I decided to introduce myself to Regina. Somewhat excited and nervous, I went down to the second floor. Entering the accounts receivable office, I spotted a stunning woman on her headset. She signaled for me to wait. Once free, I introduced myself, "Hi Regina, I'm Jim from upstairs."
She replied, "Hi Jim, I'm Amy, Regina's clerk. Did you need to speak to Regina?" My heart sank. Then Regina arrived, delighted to meet me. Contrary to my imagination, she didn’t match the image her voice had painted. I smiled, shook her hand, and engaged in polite conversation before returning to my office.
Later, I learned that Ralph, before retiring, had chosen Regina as his replacement. Somehow, I couldn't shake the feeling that he was having a good laugh somewhere.
