Phone Games of the 21st Century
Recently, I needed to contact my phone company about some unexpected charges on my bill. I was greeted by an automated system, which asked me to press one for English. After complying, I was presented with a menu of options, none of which led to a real person. The system allowed me to either press a number or speak my choice into the phone.
After listening to all the options and realizing none suited my needs, I took a chance and said "customer service." Initially, the system didn’t recognize my request, but I repeated it, hoping it might be a hidden option. To my surprise, I was informed I would be transferred to a representative. However, after a brief music snippet, I was abruptly disconnected. This cycle of attempts repeated several times before I finally got through to a human.
What frustrates me is that many companies seem to do everything they can to avoid direct communication with customers. Is it a staffing issue, or do they believe we prefer using automated menus for simple tasks like checking our bills? While some might be content with automated systems, there are many of us who need genuine assistance.
The irony is that this was a phone company, yet their system is outdated and unable to efficiently handle customer inquiries. I wish there were an organization that rated companies on customer service quality. It would certainly influence my choice. I’d be willing to switch providers and even pay more for truly excellent customer service.
