Civilization 4 and Why I Hate My Office Phone

If you're familiar with the strategy PC gaming series "Civilization," you know it's highly addictive. I've never tried crack, but rumor has it that it's similarly hard to let go. Recently, I bought Civilization 4, the latest in the series, and what happened next at work was quite an adventure.

I work as a network administrator for a large insurance company in Illinois, where part of my job involves frequently repairing PCs. I told a fellow Civ enthusiast at work about my latest purchase, and he suggested we test it out during office hours. Against my better judgement, we decided to play a "hot seat" game. For those unfamiliar, "hot seat" means each player takes a turn, perfect for turn-based games like Civ.

We assumed we could manage our little repair-shop cubbyhole easily, with one of us always available to answer the phone. How wrong we were! About four hours into the game, things got intense. My civilization found his, and war ensued. As my turn came up, my coworker headed to the bathroom. The phone rang, but I ignored it to prevent the caller from hearing the Civ theme music or the sound of my Panzers crushing his infantry.

What I forgot was our advanced phone system allows for open communication via speaker if the line isn't in use. My boss used this feature when no one picked up, catching me as I boasted aloud about my game performance. That afternoon, I found myself in his office. Fortunately, I was only reprimanded, not fired. However, my coworker now relentlessly teases me about it.

I truly despise my office phone.
