Business Phone Blues

In the world of specialty aftermarket auto parts retail, where I work, telephone sales are our backbone. With no showroom, 80% of our business relies on phone orders, while the remaining 20% comes from online sales. We distribute catalogs to requesters and past customers, and our ads appear in automotive magazines. While phone sales are crucial, I sometimes wish they weren’t.

Our phone system’s hold message is uniquely memorable, and not entirely in a good way. Our boss, a genuinely nice person, chose to replace traditional hold music with his own voice announcing weekly specials. Despite his kindness, he has a pronounced speech impediment, which adds an unintended element to the message. Being a busy company, our sales reps are often on the phone, leaving many customers on hold.

When customers finally connect with a sales rep, about 30-40% mimic our boss's voice, while the rest usually comment on the humorous tone. Some even think we're mocking speech impediments, though that's not our intention. It’s become a topic of conversation, with one customer even completing an entire order using “the voice.” While my coworkers find this both amusing and awkward, my challenge is keeping a straight face, as my cubicle is right next to the boss's office.

In the end, I find myself longing for the days of simple hold music.
