Getting More Focused: It's All About You
Jeanna Pool from Catalyst Creative publishes an insightful marketing ezine every month. In January, she shared "5 Great Marketing Tips for 2006," with the first tip being to stop focusing on yourself. She declared 2006 as the year of the client, urging businesses to prioritize client needs. While her advice is valuable, I believe there's another layer to consider.
If you've been in business for a while, offering great products and services, yet not seeing the results you desire, you might be overly focused on clients and neglecting yourself. Last week, I suggested revisiting your business vision and remembering why you started it. Now, it's time to concentrate on what you truly want. What do you aspire to achieve with your business? More income? More flexible hours? A change in the world? Be specific and write it down.
Why Focus on You?
Being clear about your desires is essential to recognize success. How can you assist clients if you're not taking care of yourself? Perhaps you need $150,000 annually to support your family’s lifestyle, send your kids to college, or retire healthily. Maybe your goal is an additional $20,000 from part-time work while caring for your children. Or perhaps you're aiming for a million-dollar income to live an extraordinary life. Defining these goals is crucial. Why?
Your desires shape your business. They determine your target customers and how you'll serve them. Aiming for $5,000,000 in sales will require different strategies than targeting $50,000. If working afternoons suits you best, your business model will reflect that. Want to sell and retire in five years? That will influence your decisions too. So, grab a pen and paper.
What Do You Want?
Take a moment to answer, "What do I want out of my business?" Write down, in detail, what you expect from it in terms of income, lifestyle, schedule, partners, travel, location, and employees. Be as specific as you can. Continue refining this throughout the week, comparing your current situation with your ideal vision. How big is the gap? Next week, I'll guide you on narrowing it with an effective action plan in "Why Business Plans Don’t Work: How to Create an Effective Action Plan."
Focus on yourself, and shape a business that truly fulfills your personal and professional goals.
