Do You Carry a Flashlight in Sales?
It took little persuasion for me to escape the cold of Toronto for sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. That trip turned out to be a pivotal moment in my understanding of sales.
A Warm Welcome
Upon arriving at the hotel, I was immediately captivated by the stunning setting, exceptional service, and abundant sunshine. Despite being inside for a three-day sales workshop, the allure of the sun drew us out during breaks. It was during one of these breaks that I experienced a memorable encounter. A group of extraordinarily tall men walked by?"none other than the San Antonio Spurs, in town to play the Phoenix Suns. I couldn't believe how tall they were!
The Workshop
Our workshop leader had a mesmerizing Texan drawl that made his stories and advice compelling. The content was outstanding, and our group quickly bonded. As the workshop neared its end, I seized the opportunity to ask a question that had been on my mind.
"What’s the single most important piece of advice for becoming a top salesperson?" I asked, eager for his insight.
He paused thoughtfully, and then delivered advice that profoundly impacted my approach to sales. He warned us about the risk of developing outsized egos in the sales profession. While confidence is important, he stressed that unchecked egos can be harmful. His crucial advice was simple yet profound: "Always shine the spotlight on your customer. They are the most important person, not you."
A Lesson from the Spurs
Reflecting on his words, I thought of the Spurs, who thrive in the spotlight. Fans cheer for their prowess and success. In contrast, sales isn’t about being the center of attention. It’s about highlighting the customer. If you’re in sales and want to succeed, remember this wisdom: always focus on your customer.
Keep this mantra in mind in the sales arena, and you'll find success: Shine the spotlight on your customer.
