In my past roles, I often held positions of responsibility, delegating tasks while managing my team. I even recall a job interview where I was asked how I'd set up a telephone conference. My response was simple: I’d reach out to IT to handle it. To my surprise, they expected me to do it myself. Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled (and didn't get the job).
Through many career changes, someone was always there to help handle those tasks I didn’t want to face, keeping me snug within my comfort zone. I relied on that safety net, until I faced a task no one wanted: distributing advertising leaflets in public.
Fate intervened when a friend offered to help after hearing my story. This made me reconsider: if someone was willing to step up for me, why wasn’t I doing the same for myself? It was fear holding me back?"fear of the unknown.
I decided it was time to overcome this fear and challenge myself. With a shift in mindset, I thought, "This could be fun! I might meet interesting people and get to enjoy lunch in town afterwards."
Reflecting on past experiences of stepping out of my comfort zone, I remembered the initial fear and uncertainty. But with time and repetition, those tasks became easier, and I adjusted my strategies.
Your mind retains the lessons you learn from new experiences. The more you do it, the easier it becomes to expand your comfort zone. As you continue to learn and grow, you'll find that becoming an expert is closer than you think.
