China Business Travel 101
Exploring Business Opportunities in China
Have you ever thought about dealing directly with manufacturers in China? It’s easier than you might think. Let me take you through my first experiences doing business in China.
First Impressions
I traveled to China in Autumn 2005 with some business associates, and I was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception we received. Contrary to my expectations, which were shaped by reports of "difficulties" between China and the U.S., our visit was neither overly formal nor cold. We were genuinely welcomed, and the hospitality, especially from hotel staff, was incredible.
Lost in Translation
While our factory visits and meetings went smoothly thanks to our Chinese contacts, navigating the streets and small shops posed language challenges. Outside these environments, few people spoke English. For my next trip, I plan to learn some basic Mandarin phrases. If you're planning a visit, I highly recommend hiring a translator to help improve your experience.
Cash is King
A quick tip: credit cards, like the Gold Card, aren’t widely accepted in Chinese shops. You’ll need to carry cash?"Chinese Yuan (Renminbi)?"for shopping and dining. The silver lining? Sticking to cash helps manage your budget, though with China's low retail prices, overspending isn't a big risk.
Bargain Shopping
Once you get past the language barriers, you'll discover fantastic bargains, especially in electronics. However, ensure you check compatibility, as some products, like Chinese DVD players, may not work in other countries.
Factory Tours
Our visit to a manufacturing plant in Huizhou was mind-blowing. Despite its nondescript exterior, the interior was a revelation. We were treated like VIPs, and the level of automation was impressive, even by American standards. The productivity numbers made it clear why China is a major player in the global market.
Looking Ahead
While our stay was only seven days, I'm eager to return, this time with friends. They've heard all about the opportunities, and they're keen to explore the potential for themselves.
In conclusion, doing business in China is not just feasible?"it’s a rewarding adventure. With a bit of preparation, you can navigate the challenges and seize the abundant opportunities.
