Three Keys to Fabric Selection
Discovering the Perfect Fabric
Choosing the right fabric can be overwhelming with so many options available in fabric shops, online, and in catalogs. Sometimes, I can't resist buying fabric even when I don't need it immediately. After all, a quilter must always have fabric on hand.
The true "magic" happens when you find a fabric you absolutely love. While it's usually easy to find a suitable fabric for your project, selecting just one can be challenging. Here are some criteria to consider when making fabric selections: colorfast quality, fiber content, and surface design. Following these guidelines will ensure you are pleased with the final result of your project.
Surface Design
The design and color of the fabric's surface are crucial.
1. Choose fabrics with similar color values so no single piece stands out in your quilt.
2. Check if there is a one-way direction in the design; you may need extra fabric for cutting patterns like plaids or stripes.
3. Consider the size of the design and background spaces. Are the designs large, medium, or small? How will they look when cut into smaller quilt pieces? If the design is too spaced, it may disappear in the cutting.
Take time to analyze the fabric, keeping these questions in mind before purchasing. It's preferable to have leftover fabric than to find out mid-project that it's out of stock.
Colorfast Quality
Avoid fabrics that fade. Pigment-dyed fabrics resist light for 40 hours, while wet-printed ones resist for 20 hours. To prevent fading, keep your quilt out of direct sunlight.
Fiber Content
Fiber content is particularly important for quilts. It influences how the fabric responds to manipulation. Standard 100% cotton fabric is ideal for quilting because it's easy to work with.
Cotton blends can be trickier, often shifting during cutting or sewing. In contrast, 100% cotton is strong when wet, absorbs moisture, creases easily, irons well at high temperatures, and is durable.
Beware of Discount Fabric
For the best results, invest in high-quality, colorfast cotton fabric from reputable suppliers. I've purchased fabric from discount stores due to appealing prints, only to face issues with the material shifting and bunching during sewing.
The problems often became evident in the finished product, and any money saved felt wasted when my quilt didn’t meet expectations. To be satisfied with your work, choose fabric that not only appeals to you but also offers quality, colorfastness, and treatment to control shrinkage, resist soil, and prevent wrinkling.
By keeping these key factors in mind, you’ll ensure your projects are both beautiful and durable.
