Professionals Get Paid, Amateurs Don't
It amazes me how many people choose not to turn professional. In various industries, particularly sales, people often overlook activities that generate wealth or cash flow. In network marketing, as in golf, millions engage as amateurs, yet only a select few earn substantial incomes. Remarkably, in network marketing, anyone can choose to be a professional, irrespective of their experience or talent. However, many still shy away from professional networking because it's easier to remain an amateur. Unfortunately, amateurs don't get paid. I've never seen a company in any sales industry reward people for anything other than selling a product or recruiting others.
Professionals focus on what pays; amateurs focus on everything else. People from all over the world, frustrated with their failures, often reach out to me. After reading my books, they want help identifying why they haven't succeeded. They typically start by detailing their activities, listing many amateur pursuits. When they're finished, I simply ask how many people they tried to sell their product to or recruit that day. Many offer elaborate excuses or become upset with my questioning.
Here's some great news: To earn substantial income, you only need to engage in professional activities briefly each day?"two hours should suffice. That's about how much time Tiger Woods spends playing golf in professional tournaments. Averaging two hours a day for ten months each year, he engages in professional play that results in all his income, including endorsements. If he played amateur golf ten hours a day, twelve months a year, he wouldn't earn nearly as much.
So, pay attention: No one in our industry gets paid for meeting with uplines, attending social events, watching TV, chatting with cross-line distributors, browsing the internet, playing video games, or walking dogs. Compensation does not come from these amateur activities. Professionals dedicate a couple of hours daily to selling and recruiting, either face-to-face or over the phone.
In one of our "High Road to Success" modules, we delve into effective shotgun-recruiting strategies. But for now, remember: Be a professional for two hours a day. Take the initiative to ask new prospects to purchase your products or join you as business associates.
