I have a background in electrical engineering and always had a love for mathematics?"a self-proclaimed logical thinker. One summer afternoon, I found myself in a hotel room, guided by my coach through an imaginary timeline marked on the carpet. The exercise was meant to tackle a problem I was facing. As I cautiously stepped forward, I felt perplexed. What was this supposed to achieve? Another step. Another puzzled glance. Suddenly, a serene calmness washed over me, resolving my issue. I realized everything would be okay by autumn.
This was my introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). I left the session feeling intrigued and curious rather than skeptical. Wanting to learn more, I joined a group of like-minded individuals and a knowledgeable trainer. Fourteen months later, I had completed both practitioner and master practitioner training.
For me, NLP became an invaluable addition to my toolkit. It’s like the pizza cutter my friend recently gifted me?"essential for more than just cutting pizza, yet I still keep my trusty knives. NLP didn’t replace my existing skills, but rather enhanced them.
In essence, NLP involves using the language of the mind to consistently achieve desired outcomes. It comprises philosophies, tools, techniques, and methodologies. With around 2 million bits of data processed by our minds every second, we naturally generalize, delete, and distort information. This is filtered based on our experiences, values, beliefs, attitudes, language, memories, and metaprograms, leading to our internal representations, emotional states, and behaviors. NLP offers us choices in how this information impacts us, and helps us understand why others might react differently.
While NLP is vast and complex, several resources are available for further exploration. As a trainer, I find NLP particularly beneficial in three areas:
Personal Development
NLP teaches you to choose your reactions to situations. While training, I consciously choose my emotional state to ensure I'm in the best mindset to confidently handle any scenario during the workshop.I always visualize positive outcomes. I imagine myself at the end of a successful workshop, experiencing the participants’ enthusiasm and hearing their positive feedback. I focus on the people who benefit from the training, rather than dwelling on negativity. After all, focusing on negative thoughts only leads to dissatisfaction.
Practical Tips:
- Anchor your feelings to a past experience where you felt satisfied and happy. Use this to influence your mindset during workshops.- Visualize receiving praise from someone you respect.
- Create vivid, colorful, and close-up mental images to enhance their impact.
By incorporating these strategies, you can improve not only your training sessions but also your personal growth as a trainer. NLP opens doors to more effective communication, understanding, and ultimately, successful outcomes in training and development.
