Neil Kozarsky of T.H.E.M. Explores Packaging Professionals and Their Recognition in Society
Understanding the Role and Perception of Packaging Experts
Have you ever wondered about the recognition packaging professionals receive? Picture this: you're at a cocktail party and someone asks, "So, what do you do for a living?" Mentioning packaging often results in guests drifting away or refilling their drinks.
Yet, the significance of our industry is undeniable. So, why the lack of respect? A portion of it falls on us. It's not about grabbing someone and saying, "Imagine a world without packaging!" It's about reflecting on our industry and unifying our efforts to educate the public.
Currently, the average person doesn’t fully grasp the packaging industry. They often think product manufacturers handle packaging or only associate packaging with brown bags and boxes. Even those with some knowledge categorize us into broad groups: glass, metal, plastics, and film.
One challenge is the absence of a singular, iconic company representing the industry?"like Boeing in aerospace or Dell in computing.
Moreover, the industry lacks a unified voice. While we have numerous trade associations, they represent different segments. For instance, the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) has bolstered its image, but it covers only a fraction of our industry. Other organizations include the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI), and many more. They each serve their members well but often contribute to fragmented messaging.
This situation is akin to the boxing world, where multiple champions dilute the sport's clarity. Our issue is not self-destruction but rather a need for respect, pride, and unity.
I take immense pride in my work, as do my colleagues, and I still attend events, proudly stating my profession when asked. Imagine a world where packaging speaks with one voice. It’s possible, but we must unite our industry to achieve it sooner rather than later.
Let’s work together to give our industry the recognition it deserves.
