Moving Past Fear to Achieve Small Business Success
Summary
One of my clients is at a pivotal moment in her business journey. Her practice has flourished to the point that she can no longer manage administrative or marketing tasks effectively. To support continued growth and enjoyment in her work, we're crafting a plan to hire administrative and functional staff. This situation is common among business owners who find themselves overwhelmed by success.
Addressing the Challenges of Growth
A major challenge she faces is finding the time to hire and train new employees while maintaining the marketing efforts that fueled her success. Returning home to a mountain of work has become a significant barrier to her growth. We recently attended a business conference, which offered innovative strategies for expansion and efficiency. Initially, my client was enthusiastic about these new possibilities. However, her excitement quickly turned to overwhelm as she realized the workload involved in implementing her vision.
The Cycle of Change
I’ve seen this scenario unfold many times, both with clients and in my personal experience. As my client reviewed the tasks required to realize her new vision, she became increasingly anxious and resistant. The list we created seemed insurmountable in her current mindset.
As her consultant, my role is to guide her through this pivotal project. I recognized that she was in the midst of the classic change cycle, which involves six stages:
1. Loss: Change evokes a sense of losing the familiar, whether good or bad.
2. Doubt: Doubts about oneself, the project, and the timing arise, creating hesitation.
3. Discomfort/Fear: This critical stage can halt progress unless overcome.
4. Discovery: Options and possibilities emerge, leading to optimism.
5. Understanding: Embracing the change and recognizing its benefits.
6. Integration: The change becomes part of your routine and life.
The discomfort or fear stage is crucial. Without moving past fear, progress stalls. Acknowledging fear is often challenging, especially when the benefits of change are clear. However, confronting this fear is vital for advancement.
Conquering Fear
Fear can seem irrational, whether it's fear of the unknown, success, or failure. It may stem from insecurities about one's abilities. The best approach is to express these fears, examine them critically, and seek support. Sharing your fears with trusted friends or colleagues can provide valuable perspective and encouragement, helping you see the benefits of change.
Embracing New Opportunities
By overcoming fear, you can begin to see opportunities and embrace new possibilities with optimism. Moving past the fear stage is essential for forward momentum and embracing new developments.
Understanding the six stages of change, particularly the pivotal fear stage, is crucial for long-term business success. Embracing change and being proactive ensures competitiveness and profitability. When faced with change, whether minor or major, help those involved transition swiftly through fear to unlock the abundance change can bring.

Embracing change is essential for small business success. Understanding and navigating the stages of change can transform fear into opportunity, fostering growth and fulfillment.
