Lake Cowichan Hotel - A Cautionary Tale

Overview

Considering a visit to the scenic Lake Cowichan in British Columbia? Think twice before booking a stay at the riverfront accommodations managed by CQ Enterprises Ltd, owned by Cathy and Daryl Youlden. Here's why you might want to explore other options.

Disappointing Experience

We recently spent three days at these accommodations, eager to enjoy a pet-friendly retreat with our medium-sized dog. Despite the attractive website photos, our experience was far from pleasant.

Room Conditions

On entering our room, we were appalled by its tiny size and lack of cleanliness. An iron burn marked the rug, and sheetrock dust coated surfaces. The overwhelming smell of fresh paint suggested rushed, unprofessional renovations.

Management and Environment

The property is centrally located in downtown Lake Cowichan, but managed by an unconventional team: a woman with a child and her partner, whose behavior raised concerns. Upon checking in, we were greeted by the woman nursing a child at the front desk. While public breastfeeding is perfectly fine, maintaining a professional atmosphere is important.

The grounds themselves were neglected. The so-called "wharf" offered little chance for relaxation, with the cold, fast-moving river making swimming unsafe. Management, often surrounded by smoke from what seemed to be marijuana, camped in a tent on-site. Their dog, a Rottweiler-Pitbull mix, was aggressive and unsupervised, attacking our dog and others multiple times.

Interaction with the Owner

Meeting Cathy, the owner, was another unsettling experience. Her erratic and self-absorbed behavior seemed to mirror the neglected state of the accommodations. Conversations with her were lengthy and uncomfortable, often veering into monologues about her self-perceived expertise.

Conclusion

It's clear that this establishment does not meet the standards one might expect. Despite its pet-friendly label, the facilities and management make it a place to avoid. Fortunately, we discovered other nearby bed and breakfasts that offer a more welcoming environment for pets and their owners.

If Lake Cowichan is on your travel itinerary, steer clear of these riverfront accommodations. Your time and money are better spent elsewhere.
