Is "Made In the USA" Destined To Be a Thing of the Past?
For decades, industries in the United States have been encouraged by the government to adopt natural gas as a primary energy source. Celebrated for its cleanliness and efficiency, natural gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 35% compared to other fossil fuels. Many industries, like the forest products sector, have switched to natural gas, which now accounts for nearly half of their purchased energy. Additionally, millions of homes are heated with it, and thousands of fleet vehicles, such as buses and delivery trucks, run on it, driving demand for this cleaner energy source to new heights.
However, this rising demand has encountered a significant hurdle. Despite promoting the use of natural gas, the government has restricted its supply, particularly through bans on exploration in coastal areas like the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) off the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. These regions hold enough natural gas to heat 100 million homes for 60 years or power 20,000 factories for 30 years. Yet, access remains off-limits.
As a result, the price of natural gas has soared, currently more than three times its historical average. This surge in cost is strangling manufacturing sectors already encouraged to switch to natural gas. What was once a manageable business expense is becoming as significant as raw materials and labor costs for industries like forest products.
This artificially inflated price, driven by limited supply and high demand, threatens the competitive edge of U.S. manufacturing. As natural gas prices rise, the cost to maintain a "Made in the USA" label becomes more burdensome, risking American jobs and the future of domestic production.
If government policies do not adapt to balance supply and demand, the emblematic "Made in the U.S.A." tag could indeed become a relic, recorded only in history books.
