Protect Your Future: Safeguard Vital Documents
Disasters, like the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes, can have lasting effects, making recovery challenging for those affected. Amidst rebuilding lives, many face the struggle of replacing important documents lost or destroyed during such events.
It often takes a calamity to highlight the importance of storing copies of essential documents securely, away from home. A study by The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. revealed that 58% of respondents became more aware of this necessity after natural disasters. However, only 21% have taken steps to prepare for such emergencies. Among those, just over half have begun copying critical documents.
Steve Spicer, a UPS Store franchisee, suggests making it an annual habit to duplicate important papers. "Tax time is perfect for reviewing and copying essential documents," he advises. "We encourage customers to bring these papers along with their tax returns. It only takes a few minutes and is relatively inexpensive."
The survey also showed that 71% of respondents view their birth certificate as a top priority for duplication. Other crucial documents include financial records like wills, bank statements, and credit card data (34%), insurance details (31%), social security information (29%), and property deeds (20%).
By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure that your vital documents are protected, making recovery easier should disaster strike.
